Degoshi Details - Old and New

The original degoshi was made in the late 1800s, and used no fixings, and in order to achieve a 130 year capable strength, each vertical requires two perfect slots to accept the two horizontal elements. The degoshi is then slotted together and fixed top and bottom.

Our daikusan (carpenter) used a partial kakiuchi joint, where the verticals and horizontals are notched to accept each other. But not to their full thickness - allowing for an original joint like appearance. They are then screwed together from behind. 

You can also see the wiped application of the new stain on the new wood, allowing the grain of the sugi to come through.
